Are You Calming the Pain—or Trying to Improve the Environment Around the Knee?
Your knee hurts.
You rest it.
You ice it.
You take something for the pain.
Eventually, someone mentions a cortisone injection.
For some knee conditions, corticosteroid injections can provide short-term pain relief. But if the pain keeps returning, it is reasonable to ask a bigger question:
“Do I want another temporary reduction in symptoms—or are there other conservative options worth exploring?”
At Koca Chiropractic, one option we evaluate for appropriate patients is SoftWave Therapy.
SoftWave and cortisone are very different approaches.
Understanding that difference can help you have a better conversation about your knee.
What Does a Cortisone Injection Do?
Cortisone is a corticosteroid medication used to reduce inflammation.
When injected into or around an irritated joint, it may decrease inflammation and provide temporary pain relief for some patients.
And there are situations where a physician may appropriately recommend it.
But pain relief does not necessarily mean the underlying knee problem has been resolved.
If the mechanical stress, tissue irritation, weakness, or movement problem remains, symptoms may eventually return.
What Does SoftWave Do Differently?
SoftWave is a non-invasive form of acoustic shockwave therapy.
Instead of injecting medication, acoustic energy is delivered into the treatment area.
The purpose is to stimulate biological responses in the tissue associated with things such as:
Increased local blood flow
Connective-tissue activation
Temporary pain relief
Tissue repair and recovery responses
That makes the philosophy different.
Cortisone primarily attempts to decrease inflammation and symptoms.
SoftWave is designed to stimulate a biological response within the tissue.
Neither approach is appropriate for every knee problem.
That’s why evaluation matters.
The Question Isn’t “Which One Is Better?”
That’s too simple.
The better question is:
“What is actually wrong with my knee, and what approach makes the most sense for me?”
Knee pain can have many causes.
It may involve:
Osteoarthritis
Tendon irritation
Previous injuries
Overuse
Meniscal problems
Joint degeneration
Hip or pelvic mechanics
Muscle weakness
Repetitive loading
A treatment that makes sense for one condition may make very little sense for another.
Why Patients Are Interested in SoftWave
One reason people come to us is that they want to explore options before moving toward repeated injections or surgery.
SoftWave is:
Non-invasive.
No incision.
Needle-free.
No injection into the knee.
Drug-free.
No medication is being used to numb or suppress the symptom.
Performed in the office.
Treatments are generally brief.
Focused on recovery.
The objective is to stimulate a biological response in the treatment area.
For the right patient, those differences can be appealing.
What About Arthritis?
This is important because we see many patients with knee arthritis.
SoftWave does not make arthritis disappear.
It does not magically create a brand-new knee.
And we would never promise that everyone with arthritis can avoid knee replacement.
What we can ask is:
How much function does this knee still have, and are there conservative strategies that may help improve pain and movement?
For some people, there may be more room for improvement than they realize.
Your Knee Is More Than an X-Ray
An X-ray can provide valuable information about joint structure and degeneration.
But we also care about what you can actually do.
Can you:
Walk comfortably?
Climb stairs?
Squat?
Exercise?
Golf?
Work in the yard?
Get out of a chair?
Keep up with your family?
Because ultimately, most patients aren’t coming to us because they want a prettier X-ray.
They want their life back.
Maybe the Goal Isn’t Just “Make My Knee Stop Hurting”
What would improving your knee allow you to do?
Walk farther?
Travel?
Golf?
Exercise?
Play with your grandchildren?
Avoid constantly thinking about every staircase?
That’s the conversation we want to have.
Because pain is important.
But function is the bigger goal.
Why Koca Chiropractic Starts With an Evaluation
We don’t start by assuming:
“You need SoftWave.”
We start by asking:
“Why does your knee hurt?”
We evaluate the knee and consider how the surrounding movement system may be contributing.
That may include looking at:
Knee function
Range of motion
Pain location
Previous injuries
Activity limitations
Hip mechanics
Pelvic mechanics
Movement patterns
WE TEST. WE DON’T GUESS.
If SoftWave appears appropriate, we can discuss it.
If your problem requires another type of care or medical referral, that matters too.
Before You Automatically Get Another Injection, Ask Another Question
We’re not telling you to ignore your doctor’s recommendations.
We’re not telling you cortisone is always wrong.
And we’re certainly not telling you to delay medically necessary treatment.
We’re simply encouraging you to become an informed patient.
Ask:
“What is causing my knee pain?”
“What is the goal of this treatment?”
“How long is the expected benefit?”
“Are there conservative options I should consider?”
“Could SoftWave be appropriate for my particular knee?”
Those are reasonable questions.
Your Knee May Have More Options Than You Think
If you’re dealing with chronic knee pain and are considering another injection—or wondering whether surgery is eventually your only option—come talk with us.
Let’s evaluate the knee first.
Then let’s discuss your options.
